About The Catholic University of America

The Catholic University of America, more popularly referred to as simply CUA, is a private university located in Washington, D.C., which is the capital of the United States, having a population of nearly 600 000 inhabitants, which rises at a number of over million, during the workweek, due to the numerous commuters from the surrounding suburbs.

CUA was established in 1887, starting as a graduate and research center, following approval by Pope Leo XIII on Easter Sunday, and began offering undergraduate education in 1904. It stays closely connected with the Catholic Church and Catholic organizations, its motto being `Deus Lux Mea Est`, which is Latin for `God Is My Light`. Its educational programs emphasize the liberal arts, professional education, and personal development, and are offered through its 11 schools and Metropolitan College, in addition to 21 research centers and facilities.

Athletics

CUA's sports teams are known as the Cardinals, which compete in NCAA Division III, in Landmark Conference, for all 21 varsity sports, except football, in which they play in Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are red and black.
